‘Nordic Walking – The Natural Workout’ Newsletter – 6th September 2018

Dear All,

So, September has arrived, the children are back at school and the weather doesn’t know which way is up!  However, the ground has successfully soaked up the rain we have had recently, so the program of walks remains unchanged.  I’m not even going to mention the forecast this week, as it is now changing on a daily basis.

What’s New?

The Macmillan Big Brew Walk (Friday 28th September) and the ‘Long Sunday’ Walk – Hey! Haigh! Away Day! (Sunday 30th September) are both available to book and there are more details on both below.  I urge you to join us on Friday 28th and support Macmillan, and the ‘Long Sunday’ Walk is an excellent opportunity for a longer walk, followed by lunch, with a bigger group of people.  Please book as soon as you can, so that we can give The Owls as much notice as possible.

I have been out & about looking at walks that will survive the Winter weather and will be suitable for the dark nights.  Therefore, a couple of new walks are now included in the program.  The walks through to the end of September are now available for booking.

Macmillan Big Brew (Friday 28th September)

Our walk on the morning of Friday 28th September will be supporting the Macmillan Big Brew.  All of the fee for the walk will be donated to Macmillan and our post-walk coffee will be at the Macmillan coffee morning in the middle of Standish.  Having spoken to Nordic Walking UK, the walk has been advertised as ‘Free’.  However, there will be a cash charge of £6 per person.  I, or maybe a ‘volunteer’, will collect the money before we start the walk and hand it to the organisers of the coffee morning, providing they promise that all of it will go to the charity.  Sorry, as it will be for charity, there will not be the usual 20% discount for those on the discount payment system.

‘Long Sunday’ Walk – Hey! Haigh! Away Day! (Sunday 30th September)

As mentioned last week, this will be a joint walk with fellow instructor Susan Spain and her group (Parks & Pathways Nordic Walking).  It’s a lovely walk that will include the Leeds-Liverpool Canal (a different stretch to those included in my other walks), the wonderful Haigh Woodland Park, and Lady Mabel’s Woods!  After the walk there will be an (optional) lunch at The Owls in Standish.

The walk is approximately 6 miles long and we have allowed 3 hours for the walk itself.  We have classified the walk as ‘strenuous’, only because of its length.  There are a couple of steady hill climbs, but nothing as steep as the steep hill in the Beacon Country Park, and there are no stiles or major obstacles.  If you are at all hesitant, please contact me.  Susan and I have several route options and, working as a team, will use them to ensure everyone finishes the walk with a smile.

The meeting point will be the car park we use for the Route 55 walk and the optional post-walk lunch will be at The Owls in Standish.

I am really looking forward to this walk.  A longer walk, run jointly with another group that finishes with lunch, will be an excellent opportunity to meet new people, walk as part of a larger group and have even more fun 😊.  Susan’s group are definitely a fun, chatty and supportive bunch 😊.

The walk is 3 weeks on Sunday and we need to book lunch.  Therefore, the earlier you book, the better.  Please don’t leave it until the last minute.  If you are away on holiday and not able to access the booking system easily, please contact me by the most convenient means and I will add you to the lunch list.  In case you don’t have my number saved on your phone, it is 07888334228.

Learn to Nordic Walk Course

Please spread the word about Nordic Walking and the next two Learn to Nordic Walk Courses.  One will start on Tuesday 25th September at 4.30pm in the Beacon Country Park in Up Holland and another will start on Saturday 29th September at 10am on Alder Lane Playing field / Chapel Lane Meadow, Bramble Way, Parbold.  The bigger the group, the more varied the ‘characters’, the more of a party each walk will become.

Christmas Walk & Lunch

Hopefully, you have put Saturday 8th December in your diaries for our Christmas walk and lunch. One possible lunch venue is The Owls at Standish, so the lunch on Sunday 30th September will double as a ‘taster’ 😊.
