‘Nordic Walking – The Natural Workout’ Newsletter – 31st August 2018

Dear All,

Well, it’s the last day of August and the sun is shining 😊.  I know many of you have been off on your holidays and I hope you have returned refreshed and ready to explore the local area with your poles.  The rain we have had has made the ground nice and soft to walk on, without making it muddy.  There are some patches of mud on some routes, but you can pick your way through them quite easily, and the Met Office is saying it’s going to be dry for our walks up to (and including) next Thursday 😊.

What’s New?

Last week, I said that another instructor and I would be out planning a longer walk.  We were out, we walked, we planned, we discussed and the first of our longer walks will take place on Sunday 30th September.  The details are below under ‘Hey! Haigh! Away Day! – Sunday Special 30th September’.  For those of you who are, or plan to be, Sunday afternoon walkers, I will still be running my usual 4pm walk.  You could join me for both, if you wish 😊

Macmillan Big Brew – Friday 28th September

Those of you who are on Facebook may have seen my post saying that our post-walk coffee on Friday 28th September will be supporting the Macmillan Big Brew.  I addition to that, all of the fee for the walk will be donated to Macmillan.  Having spoken to Nordic Walking UK, the walk will be advertised as ‘Free’.  However, there will be a cash charge or £6 per person.  I, or maybe a ‘volunteer’, will collect the money before we start the walk and hand it to the organisers of the coffee morning, providing they promise that all of it will go to the charity.  Sorry, as it will be for charity, there will not be the usual 20% discount for those on the discount payment system.

I will put the walk on the booking system on my website before the end of the weekend

Hey! Haigh! Away Day! – Sunday Special 30th September

As with the Macmillan Walk, I will put this walk on the booking system on my website before the end of the weekend and it will include all the details. However, in brief, it will be a joint walk with fellow instructor Susan Spain and her group.  It’s a lovely walk that will include the Leeds-Liverpool Canal (a different stretch to those included in my other walks), the wonderful Haigh Estate, and a saunter through Lady Mabel’s Woods!  After the walk there will be an (optional) lunch at The Owls in Standish.

The walk is approximately 6 miles long and we have classified the walk as ‘strenuous’, only because of its length.  There are a couple of steady hill climbs, but nothing as steep as the steep hill in the Beacon Country Park or Rivington Pike, and there are no stiles or major obstacles.  If you are at all hesitant, please contact me.  Susan and I have several route options and, working as a team, will use them to ensure everyone finishes the walk with a smile.

The meeting point will be the car park we use for the Route 55 walk and the optional post-walk lunch will be at The Owls in Standish.

I am really looking forward to this walk.  A longer walk, run jointly with another group that finishes with lunch, will be an excellent opportunity to meet new people, walk as part of a larger group and have even more fun 😊.  Susan’s group are definitely a fun, chatty and supportive bunch 😊.

Learn to Nordic Walk Course

Please spread the word about Nordic Walking and the next two Learn to Nordic Walk Courses.  One will start on Tuesday 25th September at 4.30pm in the Beacon Country Park in Up Holland and another will start on Saturday 29th September at 10am on Alder Lane Playing field / Chapel Lane Meadow, Bramble Way, Parbold.  The bigger the group, the more varied the ‘characters’, the more of a party each walk will become.

Christmas Walk & Lunch

Hopefully, you have put Saturday 8th December in your diaries for our Christmas walk and lunch. One possible lunch venue is The Owls at Standish, so the lunch on Sunday 30th September will double as a ‘taster’ 😊.
