‘Nordic Walking – The Natural Workout’ Newsletter – 27th January 2019

‘Nordic Walking – The Natural Workout’ Newsletter – 27th January 2019

Hi Everyone,

Well, today was interesting!  Having a voice that ‘carries’ and being able to project it even further is definitely a bonus when teaching in the wind we had on the Beacon this morning.  The course members all did really well staying on their feet and controlling their poles while learning to walk up & down hills in an extremely strong cross-wind!

Yes, January is in full swing and we have seen just about all the weather options already – wind, sun, rain, hail, snow, fog, plus anything else you can think of.  I even had to change the location of one walk because of the weather – a first for me.  It’s great to see many of you out walking and some taking advantage of the benefits of the Direct Debit to pay for their walks.  Those of you have not managed to join us for a walk yet, please take a look at the walks on the website and come and join the fun.  If you have not bought your own poles yet, don’t forget that you can borrow mine, just let me know in advance.

Shop & Drop

The next ‘Shop & Drop’ will be scheduled to be delivered to me on Wednesday 20th February, which means you need to ‘shop’ by the end of Sunday 17th February.  With 17 people due to complete the ‘Learn to Nordic Walk’ course before then, I do not expect the will be any problem with saving the postage 😊.  I will ring NW UK tomorrow and set it up.

Learn to Nordic Walk – 2019

The January Learn to Nordic Walk Courses are going well, with 17 new Nordic Walkers halfway through their training.  Those on the Wednesday morning course have already proved their enthusiasm – it poured with rain on Week 1 and there was snow on the ground for Week 2.  They did say that the Nordic weather made the poles feel even more appropriate.

The next set of courses will start early in March, when I get back from skiing.  Please spread the word among your friends and colleagues.  Tell them why you enjoy Nordic Walking and tell them about the benefits you experience, personally.

Skiing

Just as a reminder, I will be away cross-country skiing from 24th February until 3rd March, so there will be no walks during that week.  It would be great if we could book as a group for the 2019/2020 season.  I will report back, so that you can make an informed decision.  The GoPro will have been on ‘record’, so you can see that I am telling the truth, and probably have a laugh at me!

Walks – Types & Times

The promised slow-paced walk is now scheduled.  These walks have been included mainly for the benefit of those who are recovering from an illness or injury.  However, as always, everyone is welcome and I am hoping those who would like to ease themselves back into Nordic Walking after a break, want the ‘time’ to focus on their technique or just want a slow and relaxing walk will join us.

In order to schedule the walk at a time that is suitable for those who have indicated their interest, I have moved the medium-paced walk on a Friday to start at 3pm.  As the days are now getting longer, and sunset is after 4pm, it will still be daylight when that walk finishes.

As of 1st February, the Friday schedule will be:

  • 1pm – slow-paced walk.
  • 2pm – brew & social.
  • 3pm – medium-paced walk.
  • 4pm – brew & social.

Both walks will start at the same location, but the routes will vary according to the pace of the walk.
