‘Nordic Walking – The Natural Workout’ Newsletter – 19th December 2018

Dear All,

Well, Christmas is just around the corner.  I wonder if it will be a white one.  As I am sure you can guess, my brain has been working overtime thinking about 2019 and this Newsletter is an appropriate place to share the thoughts, ideas and plans related to the group.

Social Events

Our Christmas Walk & Meal was excellent, and a good time was had by all.  We nearly made it back to the pub before it rained 😊.  It would be nice to have social events throughout the year.  Therefore, if anyone sees anything that takes their fancy, please share it via the Members’ Facebook Page, or let me know and I will include it in the Newsletter.  There is no necessity to include a walk.

One I will throw into the pot is a Summer Party, maybe over the last weekend in June 2019.  Hopefully, we will have a dry Summer again and be able to eat outside – a barbeque, perhaps 😊.  Any suggestions?

Learn to Nordic Walk – 2019

The January Learn to Nordic Walk Courses are available to book via the website.  All the courses will start at 10am and the dates are:

  • Wednesday 16th January on Beacon Country Park in Up Holland.
  • Friday 18th January on Alder Lane Playing Fields / Chapel Lane Meadow in Parbold.
  • Sunday 20th January on Beacon Country Park in Up Holland.

Please spread the word amongst your friends and colleagues.  New Year is a time when many people think about getting active.  Tell them why you enjoy Nordic Walking and tell them about the benefits you experience, personally.  If they would like to join us, but the above dates are not convenient, please tell them to contact me, so that I can ensure the next set of courses include one that they are able to attend.

My leaflets should arrive from the printers tomorrow.  Please let me know, if you would like any.

Skiing

Those of you who are on Facebook, will have seen my post about Cross-Country Skiing.  I have booked for this year, but it would be great if we could book as a group for the 2019/2020 season.  I will report back, so that you can make an informed decision.

Types of Walks

Our numbers are growing steadily, which is brilliant.  However, this also means that we have a greater variation in what our members want from their walks.  Everyone is different and I am constantly reviewing the walks on offer to ensure that there is something for everyone.  As a result, I plan to make a few changes in the New Year:

  • The details for all walks will include a comment regarding the ‘pace’ – slow, medium or fast. The pace you probably expect now will be described as ‘medium-paced’, and this will apply to the majority of walks.
  • There will be at least one regular ‘slow-paced’, 1-hour walk added to the program.
  • The details for all walks will include more detail regarding the terrain and difficulty, including the need to cross styles.
  • All walks will have the potential to speed up, above the pace advertised, to a level agreed by all those attending. When booking, please assume you will be walking at the advertised pace.

As you know, deciding when to run specific types of walk is a very imprecise art.  I have put a poll on Facebook and would appreciate it if you would respond with your preferences for pace (fast, medium or slow) and duration (1 hour, 1.5 hours or longer).  If none of the options fit for you, please comment below the poll.  Those of you who are not on Facebook, or rarely use it, please text or e-mail me with your preference.

When I know who wants the ‘fast-paced’ walks, I will add them to the program.

Walks Available to Book

I will not be available to run walks between Christmas Eve and 30th December (inclusive), so there will not be any walks during that week.  There is a walk available on the morning of Monday 31st December, but I thought you would be too busy preparing to celebrate to go out walking on the night of New Year’s Eve.  If I am wrong, please let me know 😊

There are currently 37 walks available to book and they are listed below.  Follow the link to my website https://nwukthenaturalworkout.co.uk/activities/ to find all of the details and photographs, and to book.
